The SLV M-V GmbH was founded in 1994 as a non-profit research institution with focus on laser material processing. The company´s main fields are education and training, quality assurance, materials testing as well as research and development. The SLV M-V GmbH works as a recognized training center of the German Association for Welding Technology and as a "recognized body" for the issuance of manufacturer qualifications. The SLV M-V GmbH has been the only non-Russian certification center for NAKS since 2005 and offers its services in Europe. In addition, SLV M-V conducts research and development for the cross-sectional technologies of welding, cutting and related processes. The R&D department carries out non-competitive work as well as work on behalf of individual companies.

In the field education and training is practical education combined with virtual training of welding personnel one of the main tasks. Furthermore, the SLV M-V GmbH develops and offers customized seminars for additive manufacturing, robotized welding and laser welding. The practical training for becoming a welding operator as well as the theoretical instruction of welding supervisors to become European Welding Engineers, European Welding Technologists and European Welding Specialists is carried out according to the regulations of the European Welding Federation. Also courses to Laser Beam Specialists according to regulations of the German Welding Society and the European Welding Federation are offered. The quality assurance department of SLV M-V carries out external monitoring during the construction of buildings and deals with operational inspections, material acceptance and process approvals as well as with damage claims, court reports and consulting services. The SLV M-V has an accredited material testing laboratory for material testing. Investigations for non-destructive and destructive material testing, questions of microscopic as well as quantitative and qualitative material identification determine the standard program. The research work is based requirements in practical enterprises and industry. SLV is concerned with problems in the application of laser technologies in shipbuilding and other branches dealing with large structures. In addition to welding projects and work, the focus is increasingly on projects in the field of micromachining using ultrashort pulse lasers. Due to numerous research projects at national and international level, the company has been established as a competence center for laser technology, especially in the field of laser welding and additive manufacturing. Since 1996 the scope of research and development includes application fields e.g. shipbuilding, aerospace and automotive. Presently laser welding, laser-hybrid-welding and laser surfacing, especially with flexible and mobile solid-state laser sources, are the main fields of SLV research activities.
